Bred by Henry Bennett (United Kingdom, circa 1885). Introduced in United States by Chas. F. Evans in 1887 as 'Mrs. John Laing'. Hybrid Perpetual. Deep pink, lighter edges. Strong, centifolia, tea fragrance. up to 45 petals. Average diameter 4". Large, very full (41+ petals), cupped, globular, scalloped bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season. Thornless (or almost), upright, well-branched. Height of 3' to 7' (90 to 215 cm). Width of 2' to 3' (60 to 90 cm). Istoric: HYBRID PERPETUAL roses were mostly developed as hardy garden plants between 1840 and 1900, by crossing the Portland, Bourbon and Gallica roses. Most had very large, sweet-scented flowers in shades of pink or red, borne on long arching stems. In Victorian gardens it became common practice to ‘peg down’ these stems to encourage flowers along the entire length of the stem, but Hybrid Perpetuals were mainly grown as cut flowers, often for exhibition only. By 1900 it is estimated that some 4000 hybrids had been introduced, but they quickly lost ground to the superior Hybrid Teas.
